Erica Abi Wright was born in February 26th 1971. She was raised in
Dallas, Texas with African-American parents. Today she is an artist
who combines Classic Soul/Jazz and Hip-Hop to create songs such as ‘On
and On’, ‘Tyrone’, ‘Next Lifetime’ and ‘Apple Tree’. Her collaboration
with the Roots was she found her first success and exposure. It was
the Hip-Hop/Drum and Bass number of ‘You Got Me’, were Jill Scott
would write the lyrics too. Her lyrics are philosophical and give the
listener a taste of her reality. Musically she has worked with many
different producers giving her sound different identities. The sound
of Badu is known ad Neo Soul, however the lady herself doesn’t label
her music, this has just occurred in the Industry. Often her lyrical
delivery is compared to Billie Holiday and musically with Maxwell or
D’Angelo. Her change of name was to find meaning, and she sure did.
From Erica Abi Wright (slave name) to Badu which means ‘to manifest
truth’ in Arabic. As well as a talented artist she performs just as
well in the studio as she does on stage, and she has shared company
with Burning Spear, the roots rock reggae act. With ex-boyfriend Andre
300 (of Outkast) she had a son named Seven.
