Jill Scott was born April, 4th 1972; her music varies from Jazz, R&B
to Blues and Soul. Her roots began in North Philadelphia, which she
expresses through her lyrics and says to the audience that she
is ‘Jilly from Philly’. She was found by a drummer called Amir “?
uestlove” Thompson of hip-hop group the Roots. Amir wanted Jill to
attend a studio session and here they wrote/recorded the song ‘You
Got Me’, which was sung by Erykah Badu. She experienced a few
broadways, one in particular was a show run in Canada called Rent.
After this experience she would collaborate with Eric Benet, Will
Smith and Common. She was soon picked up by Steve McKeever, who formed
the Hidden Beach Recordings label in Santa Monica. A summer later she
recorded and released the phenomenon debut ‘Who Is Jill Scott? Word’s
and Sounds Vol.1’. It was the freshest and most original record that
was currently out in the modern day Soul world and was an instant
classic. Jill thankfully won Best R&B Solo Vocal Performance, Male or
Female. In 2004 she released her second record called ‘Beautifully
Human: Words and Sounds Vol.2’.
