It was only when Kenny Gamble saw
the sing as a trio backing group for Diana Ross during her mid-70’s tour, Kenny signed the
girls straight away to his Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International Records. The Jones Girls
had an immediate first dance single called “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else”,
released from their debut album. It stormed the Pop, Soul and Dance charts. They would
soon follow with the soulful ballad of “We’re A Melody”. They were stunning looking women,
with mind blowing vocal talents and together on one record sounded heavenly. With the lush
production that Gamble & Huff and Dexter Wansel offered, they found their identity. The
sweet soul music just kept on coming from the Jones Girls with albums such as “At Peace
With A Woman” and “Get As Much Love As You Can” and “Rejoice”. All offered hits such as
‘Nights Over Egypt’ and ‘I Just Love the Man’, which was originally recorded by the Stylistics.
It was only when the group signed to MCA Records that the sweet soul music stopped.
However, the group has left a legacy of great music, they’ve made timeless soul music hits.
Shirley, Brenda, and Valerie will remain a firm favourite for many, the Jones Girls live on.
