Interview
TwinSpirit [December 23rd 2005]

TwinSpirits is such a nice lady, we spoke on the phone about doing this interview, and she came across as very humble/respectful individual. Like MFC, she is very independent, she has her own company called TwinSpirits.

Matthew: How would you describe your music?
TwinSpirit: Well in my opinion it’s sort of like music gumbo. There’s a heaping does of jazz, a dash of gospel flavour, a bit of hip-hop thrown in for spice, and it’s all mixed in a soulful base.

Matthew: When I listen to your music it reminds be of what Billy Holiday may sound like on hip-hop. Who were your vocal influences?
TwinSpirit: Some of my favs that really influenced me are Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, and other greats such as Billy Holiday. I cannot overlook those that currently have a great impact on me like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Fertile Ground and Julie Dexter. Really there are so many I could not even begin to list them all.

Interview

Matthew: What are your other musical talents asides singing?
TwinSpirit: I write and produce also. I got into the production end of things out pure of frustration honestly. I got so tired of having to wait on someone else to make time for me in their schedule to lay down my ideas. I (being the headstrong person I am) decided that I needed to learn how to do more for myself musically. It has been and still is a learning experience but I am glad I just dove right in because it has given me a new found creative freedom.

Matthew: You started in a female trio group called ‘Authentik Soul’ in the 90’s. Tell us about that.
TwinSpirit: Well some producer friends of mine decided they wanted to put together a female group and they talked me and three other young ladies into the idea. I must say none of us ladies were really feeling the idea at all. Simply because we knew that not all personalities or voices meshed well. After we met one another and started on that journey it turned out to be a very rewarding experience. I made some great friends and our voices created a beautiful sound when they blended. The harmonies were ‘angelic’ as some described it. We had the opportunity to create some great memories and to help one another grow musically.

Matthew: You supported some amazing names in that group such as Ray J, H-Town, Benito, Tamia, and the legendary O’Jays. How did that aff ect your performing skills?
TwinSpirit: Kema who is still performing with a hot gospel act. Angela is also still pursuing her musical dream via the gospel sector. Last but not least is Kendra who I hear is going to be heading into the studio soon is doing also well.

Matthew: In my classic soul collection I have names like Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, The Undisputed Truth and Otis Clay. Who were your household names as a child and current?
TwinSpirit: Rose Royce, Aretha Franklin, Maze, Natalia Cole, Ike and Tina...my mom loved music and introduced to that wonderful world early on. It seems that I even remember songs I heard as a baby.

Matthew: I have just watched the Anthony Hamilton live DVD, his performing skills are mind blowing. How important is it to put on a good show?
TwinSpirit: Really I believe that if I give the audience all that I have to give and give it honestly and from my soul then the show will be good. I like to give people what they came for…

Matthew: Who would you like to work with next?
TwinSpirit: If I could work with anyone in the world I would have to say that I would love to work with Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, Jill Scott and Common.

Matthew: Are you going to be come over to the UK to perform?
TwinSpirit: There are a few tentative dates up in the air right now, but I would love to come to the UK and perform. So by all means if anyone is interested in having me then by all means drop me a line…have band will travel…lol!!!

Matthew: What you currently planning and up to now?
TwinSpirit: I am currently in the process of recording my 2nd CD project. I am working with some producers and musicians this go round. Like Jay Brown of Code Red Entertainment, Tim Anthony with Twin Records out of Little Rock, AT. Rhemona Quimby with Emerge Records. Ardell Allen one of the hottest producers in Atlanta, GA. Also Big Keys – this fella is an amazing producer and vocalist. So I must say that I am excited about this new release. Lots of travel is also in my future so everyone keep and ears open for show dates in your area.

Matthew: Thank you for your time and I look forward to reviewing your music.
TwinSpirit: Thank you for having me. Peace and Blessings to you.
